Keeping Track of Church Equipment

We’ve all, more than likely, heard the phrase “let’s just keep the honest people honest”. It’s a phrase to live by. Without some form of accountability, keeping track of your church equipment, or even personal, can be tricky. I’ve found two ways to really make this easier on you.

Step 1: Buy Some Apple AirTags

Apple AirTags have caught a bad reputation over the last couple of years because of sketchy people doing sketchy things. However, this doesn’t mean we can’t use these to help keep track of our churches equipment.

Step 2: Find Out How Your Attaching The Air Tag

Keep in mind that AirTags, on average an Apple AirTag needs to have its CR2032 battery changed out once a year. So, placement needs to be something that’s discreet / hidden but still accessible.

Option 1: The “Sticky Tag”

Yeah, I made that name up but it works. I found these neat little AirTag Cases on Amazon that have 3M adhesive on the back, and you lock the AirTag in with screws. This is great for things like rack units, lights, pedalboards, instruments or any larger item / case. We include these with our custom track rig builds. Keeping track of church equipment has never been easier, right?

Option 2: The Hidden Tag

Keep in mind that Apple notifies users if an AirTag follows them, so this could scare the daylights out of someone that has gear, even if it was approved, so maybe let them know ahead of time. This is handy for guitars and pedals. On Guitars, simply take the pick guard off and hide it in there, which could potentially be tricky but you’ve never ran away from a challenge, so I believe in you. Just make sure it’s taped down or it a place that won’t make contacts with any other electronics. Strats have a great back cavity that could be used for this. On pedals, tape up the 9v power with electrical tape and shove the AirTag in there. MAKE SURE YOU TAPE IT UP TO AVOID SHORT CIRCUITING.

Step 3: Stickers From Moo.com

I LOVE this option. It’s particularly handy for things like cables. Just order the smallest size, put a darker (or black and white) version of your logo on the sticker, to avoid being bright and standing out. This will eliminate any question of if that cable belongs to the church or an individual. I typically put these on both connectors of a cable, as the wire it’s self tends to not stick very well. I use the sticker book option and it absolutely rocks.

Step 4: Find My iPhone

Tried and true, turn this feature on for your computers and tablets. The feature will track as long as the device is on and at least show you the last place it was if the device was turned off or died. This still needs some work in my personal opinion.

Keeping The Honest People Honest

Ultimately, we want volunteers and staff to be honest, and most are. However, things happen so it’s nice to have some accountability to keep track of things. After all, we do want to be good stewards and part of that is not re-purchasing the same thing ninety seven times. I hope this guide helps you with keeping track of your church equipment!
