3 Reasons You Should Be Tuning Your Room

Imagine you’re trying to EQ a vocal channel and no matter what you do it never sounds right in the high end, or maybe it’s the mid-range. Thought that’s an extreme example, this could be partially caused by improper room tuning. Tuning your room, simply put, is done through an RTA mic, Diffusion, or Absorption. In this article we’ll be primarily focusing on the use of an RTA mic. Specifically the why. Here’s three reasons I believe your should be tuning your room.

1: Get The Most Out of Your Line-Array System

Everyone can pretty much agree that the line-array system trend that sparked a fire into the church audio world over the last 10-15 years was for the best. Gone are the days of giant box speakers that only cover a specific portion of the room. However, these speakers aren’t going to sound as good as they are capable of if you’re not tuning your room properly. Yes, these are full range speakers but they really shouldn’t have the sub frequencies in them. Furthermore, sometimes when you use an RTA mic to measure your room, you’ll find that some of the midrange is off. This isn’t necessarily due to the speakers as much as it’s the room itself.

2: More Accurate Mixes

Have you ever tried mixing something from a set of crappy computer speakers? If your muddy frequencies are hitting your line-arrays, it’s likely that you’ll be experiencing what it feels like to mix in a car or SkullCandy earbuds. You’ll often find that when you tune your room, whatever EQ was on already may sound rough, that’s because you were compensating for the room rather than the source.

3: Better Worship Experience

I know that all three of these reasons sort of blend in together but it doesn’t mean that any of them are less important. My philosophy on church technology is that everything that’s done in service should enhance the worship experience without causing distraction. If you don’t have enough speakers in a room or the room isn’t tuned properly, your congregants will have various issues with high or mid frequencies that seem piercing. You may catch some of them in time to fix them, but ultimately, by fixing the tuning issue you’ll find that everything is a lot more smooth and well rounded. It’s the things that you don’t notice that actually end up mattering the most sometimes.
