How to Control the EOS C70 With Ronin RS3 Pro
It’s pretty exciting getting new camera gear right? Especially as it pertains to video gear. My other job is a photographer and videographer. I recently bought a brand spankin’ new Ronin RS3 Pro. My reasoning for purchasing the following; my current gimbal was broken, it can support the weight of the Canon EOS c70, and the new Raveneye Wireless HDMI transmitter was a huge plus.
First Things First. How is This Relevant to Churches?
Using a Ronin with your livestream is a common thing in recent years. The smooth motion of the gimbal makes getting action shots of a band situation so much more visually appealing. As far as the control side, the biggest concern is that you need to know your limitations. The Raveneye, in my opinion, doesn’t seem to be a relevant feature for churches at this time. Mostly due to taking up your cameras HDMI port, which is your pathway into your churches video switcher.
Canon EOS c70 + ronin RS3 Pro = restrictions
Canon is usually behind on things, but as far as color science, sharpness, and autofocus, they seem to always come out on top of the other brands. These restrictions don’t really come into play until you try to pair it up with the Ronin RS3 Pro. The EOS c70 doesn’t have Bluetooth capability at this time. This creates a slight problem with controlling the camera from the Ronin RS3 Pro. The only controls that you’ll have will be your record button. However, this version of the record button seems to work better than the past models.
A Work-Around For Control
If you’re using RF Mount lenses with your Canon C70, you can use DJI’s follow focus system to turn the control ring of the lens rather than zoom or focus. At which point you can assign the control ring to a function that you’ll use frequently. Mine is set to control color temperature.
So How Do You Do It?
This is the part that you’ve been waiting for right? It took me about three hours to figure out how to get this working properly. So let me save you some time.
Connect the included USB-C cable to your C70
Connect the same cable to the top USB-C port on your Ronin RS3 Pro
Update your Firmware. My firmware was the 1.0.3.1 release. This is where my three hours of troubleshooting came into play. Updated to the 1.0.6.1 release and it was smooth sailing. Just keep in mind that you will erase ALL OF YOUR SETTINGS if you update the firmware on your EOS c70.
There Was ZERO Information On The Update
I couldn’t find any information on why my Ronin RS-3 Pro wasn’t communicating to my EOS c70. I hope that this helps you save some precious time and hair pulling.
