3 Major Benefits of Using Dante

Audinate really created a system that has some form of usage for nearly everyone. Networked audio is not something new by any stretch of the imagination but I think we can all agree that Audinate creating Dante has been one of the largest cross-platform upgrades to ProAudio in a long time.

What is Dante?

For those of you who aren’t super familiar with Dante, it’s simply a way to manage audio sources and destinations over a network, causing massive expansion capabilities to your system. For example, in the routing section of your console, assuming you have a Dante Card, you can now choose from any device that is on that Dante Network.

1: Getting Rid Of Interfaces

Our church is in the middle of a Dante upgrade, but the parts are currently back ordered. So as of now, I have an interface for multitracks and an interface for MainStage. Not only do these take up valuable space, but between the two computer setups we use 9 direct boxes. Once our transition is complete, we’ll get those direct boxes and interfaces back to use as we please. Just simply route the audio out of the computer via Ethernet cable into the Dante network. At which point, the audio output device just needs to be set to the proper Dante inputs via your DAW preferences. Added bonus, this helps have a cleaner stage as well.

2: Broadcast Mix

USB audio from certain consoles, looking at you Behringer, can’t compete with the network audio from Dante. It’s just cleaner and has the capability to go up to 64x64 all while doing so at 96k. So mixing with a Dante feed is definitely a level-up.

3: Routing Flexibility

Dante can just about do anything you can imagine, assuming you have the right adapters. For example, if I want to run a matrix out to a separate building, that just so happens to be on the network, I can do that with cat6 and a Dante to XLR adapter. As a studio guy and our churches MD, it’s really handy to multitrack during the week from the stage as opposed to running back and forth to the broadcast room to start and stop.

It Can Honestly Do So Much More

The sky is the limit with Dante, it will really make you think about new opportunities that you may have not had before as far as routing is concerned. I can’t recommend it enough.
